Blog Award

I’m so chuffed to think that people read and enjoy my blog enough to read it, and then….. to actually nominate it for an award! WOW!

I have been nominated by Chloris @ The Blooming Garden, a fantastic blog, and one of my favourite garden blogging reads on the interweb. Thankyou so much!

At first I didn’t know much about the blog awards, so thankfully Chloris posted a blurb on her site explaining what it is:

So what are these awards? I have done a little research and it seems they are a bit like chain letters, except you are not promised great riches as long as you keep them going and you are not threatened with catastrophe if you don’t. Really, they are a way of telling other people when you find a blog that you enjoy, which is lovely, as we all hope that we are not talking to ourselves when we write……..So what do you have to do when accepting the Liebster Award? You link back with the person who nominated you then you have to answer the 11 questions  they set you.”

From the info I read, I think that sums it up pretty succinctly 🙂

So, to answer Chloris’ questions:

1. Why did you start your blog? I’d only once before undertaken a total house and garden restoration: well before digital cameras and the internet, and I took only  a handful of polaroids to remember it all by. This time around, I wanted to remember the progress step-by-step as well as connect with people who were undertaking similar projects.

2. Which is your favourite gardening book? Botanica. It’s a massive 1100 page reference book sorted by Latin names and with beautiful pictures.

3. What do you love to do when you are not gardening? Renovate the very shabby house and work to pay for it all 🙂

4. Describe yourself in 3 words. A Dreamer, Gardenfanatic, Nuts 🙂

5. What is your  favourite film? Death becomes her

6. Tea or coffee? Coffee

7. Favourite flower? Just one? Cut flower would have to be Tulips…funnily enough I haven’t planted any of these. Garden flower is Lupins

8. How long have you been gardening and what got you started? It all started very young – I was probably 5 and it was because of both of my Grandfathers.

On my Father’s side, my Grandfather raised his family through the depression in inner city Sydney, and if you didn’t garden, then you didn’t eat. His little block of land (just 200m2) had arguably the poorest, most lifeless soil I have ever seen, yet he managed lemons, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuces, potatoes, herbs, plums, apricots, apples, even dahlias and roses so his wife could have flowers for the front parlour. He had a great ability to get the most from the land.

On my Mother’s side, my Grandfather owned 100,000 acres of grazing and farming land in tropical Queensland. The soil was rich iron-red and black from old volcanos. Those of us in the temperate world can’t fathom just how quickly plants can grow until you’ve seen the seasons in the tropics. Honestly, if you even dropped a piece of plant material accidentally, it would root and take hold in a matter of weeks! I would help out my Granddad picking mangoes, tamarinds, avocadoes, bananas, pineapples, cutting sugar cane (not fun) and mustering the Brahman cattle on horse back (lots of fun).

I’m sure that being on the farm ruined me for ever being able to spend more than an hour or two inside without getting cabin fever 🙂

So I have been gardening for almost 50 years. To be able to do it professionally is a dream come true.

9. Do you garden organically? Yes

10. How do you deal with slugs and snails? I generally just leave them alone. I also don’t pick plants that are susceptible (such as Hostas), but, being in Australia, I am lucky to have a Blue-tongue lizard visit the garden every now and then and it makes short work of any snails and slugs.

11.  Do you prefer cats or dogs? Both 🙂

And so now, as part of accepting this award, I have to nominate five other blogs. This is the really hard part: if it were up to me, I’d pick all of the blogs I follow. But the award is designed to promote those blogs which are relatively new and have fewer than 1000 followers. So here goes:

Vanha Talo Soumi

The Shrub Queen

Automatic Gardening & Real Gluten Free Food

Flutter and Hum

The Gardens at Coppertop

So, my dear Liebster Award nominees, if you choose to accept the award, then my eleven questions for you are:

1. What is the best thing about blogging?

2. How did you come up with your blog name?

3. What is your favourite tree?

4. Favourite shrub?

5. What would be your ideal sized garden?

6. Besides gardening, what is your favourite hobby?

7. What is your favourite type of music?

8. What book(s) are you currently reading?

9. Where is your ideal holiday destination?

10. Do you prefer sweet or savoury foods?

11. Name five famous people (alive or dead) that you would love to have a dinner party with?

So if you accept the award, just link back to this blog in a new post, answer the questions and choose five other blogs with under 1000 followers.

Thankyou once again, Chloris, it’s wonderful to accept the award.

Happy Gardening 🙂
